Foxton Locks Figure of Eight Ramble and Carvery
Overview
This Popular ramble with Rob Smith has now been converted into a figure of eight ramble to take in the village of Lubenham. Figure of Eight rambles have become very popular as they appeal to both social ramblers who just want a short morning or afternoon ramble and longer ramblers who want a full day ramble. Both halves are around 4½ miles.
The morning ramble starts from the upper car park at Foxton locks and heads southwards to the lovely village of Lubenham. After a walk, around the village famous for its annual scarecrow festival we return back to Foxton passing the beautiful church. We will then return along the canal to Foxton where we will have a break before the afternoon. There is one incline but we can take our time and there are some great views.
If you choose the morning ramble you can either finish then (if the weather isn’t too good – or the pub is more inviting!) or carry on with the afternoon one.
The afternoon ramble explores the flight of locks and the Inclined Plane (used to move larger barges that wouldn’t fit into the locks) admiring the stunning views over the surrounding countryside before going along the canal to the village of Foxton. Then we make our way towards Gumley and around the woods. We skirt around Smeeton Hill and then through the village. Finally we make our way back to Foxton Locks and enjoy our Sunday Lunch.
The picturesque and interesting Foxton Locks (ten locks consisting of two "staircases" each of five locks on the Grand Union Canal) just over the border in Leicestershire.
You have the option of a Sunday carvery after the ramble.
