Overview

Join Linda for this 7 mile, London Blackfriars to Oxford Circus walk, British Museum & Gardens Visits.

Please meet just inside Blackfriars railway station on the north side of the Thames (NOT the south side of the Thames) by 10:40 ready for a prompt 10:45 departure. We depart at 10:45 because this is a weekday walk and this later departure time allows walkers to take advantage of off-peak train prices.

We will initially walk alongside the River Thames and then via back streets to the New London Architecture building where we will have a visit to see models showing different aspects of London's architecture plus information displays.

The 1:500, 3D scale model shows the City of London and it's iconic buildings. St. Paul's Cathedral was London's tallest building until 1963 and although now dwarfed by numerous newer buildings, the model shows how planning permissions still ensure that St. Paul's Cathedral's unique protection, that it must have uninterrupted views for many miles in multiple directions, is maintained.

We'll then walk back to the River Thames, across the Millennium Bridge and down to Waterloo Bridge where we will cross back to stop for lunch at about 13:00 (at your own expense) in an Angus Steakhouse to take advantage of their special lunchtime deals menu. En-route, we'll see where Europe's first disc recording studio once stood and where Charles Dickens worked as a boy.

After lunch we'll walk through numerous gardens and back streets including London's oldest square garden (1st laid out in 1665) and London's smallest street.

This will lead us to the British Museum where we will have time to enjoy the displays. You can either initially walk with me around the main four floors to visit the 12 most important, 'not to be missed' exhibits before having free time to guide yourself around the museum or you may prefer to self-guide yourself for the whole visit.

Next, we'll take a 15 minute walk to a Wetherspoons pub where you can treat yourself to a cup of tea or something stronger!

Your walk leader, Linda will be having tea and something to eat before going to the Spice, monthly, 1st Friday Social gathering in The Champion pub which is nearby. You might also like to attend the free of charge, monthly Spice social but please note that you MUST book it separately, via the Spice website, if you want the Spice host there to buy you your first drink!

If you opt to go home after the end of walk drink stop in Wetherspoons, Tottenham Court Road or Leicester Square are the nearest tube stations.

If you choose to go to the Spice, 1st Friday pub social event, either Tottenham Court Road or Oxford Circus are the nearest tube stations to go home from.

Please bring drinking water, money to buy lunch and any other drinks and snacks you may want.

Please dress for the weather on the day (and bring a golfing umbrella if it is expected to rain!).

Please check your transport times, and for any engineering works, at least the day before the walk and allow some contingency time for delays. The walk needs to depart on time for the comfort and enjoyment of those who have arrived on time. Thank you.
