Join us in the fabulous Yorkshire coast seaside town for a fun social weekend.

From walking on the Cleveland Way, exploring the castle, the sea life centre, the Victorian spa, the renowned Stephen Joseph theatre, two fabulous beaches, beautiful gardens and loads of seaside fun, Scarborough has lots to offer.

Our visit coincides with Scarborough Armed Forces Day on the Saturday, and the programme of events is likely to include marching bands, parades and air displays.

We expect a naval battle to take place on Peasholm Park Lake on the Saturday too!

Subject to the weather & tides we will organise an optional group boat trip out on one of the Scarborough Pleasure Steamers to see the coast from the North Sea.

These weekends are great for socialising with like-minded Spice members in a beautiful location. If you’ve never been on a Spice weekend before give it a go - we're sure you'll love it! If you have been before you’ll already understand why they are so popular.

Scarborough South Bay

For those that like to walk or cycle, the hostel is near the Cinder Track - a disused railway line, which is now a footpath and cycle way to Whitby.

Also nearby, the Cleveland Way is a National Trail in ancient Cleveland in northern England running 110 miles between Helmsley and the Filey Brigg, skirting the North York Moors National Park. The section near the hostel is a coastal path with dramatic views.

We'll be eating in the hostel one evening, and on the other we will eat a two course meal at the nearby Scalby Mills pub.

Location & Itinerary

With two long sandy beaches, miles of rugged coastline and some of the largest areas of forest and moorland in the UK, Scarborough is a perfect base for activity breaks with excellent walking, cycling, mountain biking, surfing and sailing. There is also plenty for those interested in wildlife, history, geology and the seashore and the fabulous RSPB Bempton Cliffs are just 18 miles away for those interested in coastal birds.

Scarborough has the lot, stunning scenery, glorious beaches, loads to see and do – it's no wonder that people have been flocking there for nearly 400 years.

You can still immerse yourself in history with Scarborough Castle and the Rotunda Museum of geology. You could venture down to the seafront to see the traditional amusement arcades, ice cream parlours, shellfish stalls and beach huts. But despite its rich history, Scarborough doesn’t live in the past. The town is constantly innovating to keep its place as one of the most popular holiday destinations in the UK.

Outdoor adventures can be found all around: try boating in Peasholm Park; take a ride on the miniature railway; be daring on the Sky Trail Adventure bridge and beam course; splash about at Alpamare Waterpark; learn surfing at one of the surf shops or make friends with penguins at Scarborough Sea Life Sanctuary.

For the sightseers amongst us who want to travel a bit further afield, our location is just 14 miles from Robin Hood's Bay, 17 miles from Whitby and just 8 miles from the stunning coastal Ravenscar Village.

You can find out more about this stunning area on the Discover Yorkshire Coast website here.

Food & Meals

Included in the weekend are one cooked breakfast, one continental breakfast, and two evening meals (help with cooking and the cleaning up is as always very much welcomed & expected).

Friday meal: We will enjoy Karen's excellent cooking in the hostel!

Saturday meal: On Saturday we will eat at the nearby pub, Scalby Manor - you can see their menu at https://www.stonehouserestaurants.co.uk/nationalsearch/yorkshire-and-the-humber/scalbymanorscarborough/main-menu. Your carvery or alternative main course and dessert are included.

Travel & Stay

Scarborough YHA

Scarborough Youth Hostel, once a 17th century water mill, is set on a quiet riverside, just 1½ miles north of the town centre and only 15 minutes walk from Scalby Mills and the North Bay beach.

The hostel has shared dormitories of 4 or 6 per room and also a couple of twin rooms, and can take a maximum of 44 people, but we are limiting numbers to 35 for everyone's comfort.

Bedding is also included so you don't need to worry about lugging your sleeping bag or duvet around the country with you!

Getting There

Scarborough Youth Hostel is located beside Scalby Beck, two miles north of the town centre on the A165 to Whitby. After the Gulf Service Station go down the hill, around a bend and over the bridge. The entrance to Scarborough Youth Hostel is a very sharp left turn, immediately after the bridge. It is much safer and easier to go past the entrance, make a U turn and then turn right into the driveway.

There is parking on site for around a dozen cars or more if we block each other in and extra cars can be parked just around the corner from the hostel.

Scarborough railway station is only about 1½ miles from the accommodation.

Super YHA well equipped and in a lovely location, fantastic social weekend with plenty to do for those who didn't want to walk. A proper weekend at the seaside!

Back from an amazing and relaxing weekend. Blessed with lovely weather and great company. Scarborough offers plenty to do whether you like serious walking or strolling on the prom with an ice cream. Or maybe indulging in fish & chips and a pint in the pub! Proper traditional seaside fun was enjoyed in bucket-loads!

This was a well organized, friendly event, with a lot of variety and choice. It was an all-round great weekend, and reminded me how much I love being a part of Spice.

The youth hostel was the perfect setting for a really great weekend, beautiful weather, Karen was very welcoming and helpful. She worked very hard at organising (and doing most of ) the cooking. This was my first Spice event so I did not know what to expect, but everyone one was very friendly and the walks were lovely. I would recommend this weekend and will be booking more now.
