Overview

Over 40 years ago, in 1982, Argentina seized control of the Falkland Islands, a British territory in the south Atlantic Ocean.

The Royal Air Force was mobilised as part of the UK’s efforts to liberate the Islands. After years of focusing on the Cold War in Europe, the RAF had to adapt its approach radically and rapidly for the Falklands campaign. It carried out intelligence gathering, long-range bombing, air defence, ground attacks, resupply, and close air support missions for the UK’s military task force.

The RAF’s heavy lift and transport capability across the harsh terrain of the Islands was a particular advantage. The RAF played a significant role alongside the British Army and Royal Navy in delivering victory on 14 June 1982.

The Chinook ‘Bravo November’ played a vital role in British military operations during the Falklands campaign. You will be able to see her alongside other Falklands artefacts including the Harrier GR3 and the ‘Black Buck’ Vulcan B2.

The story of the RAF's most famous helicopter

This Chinook, known as Bravo November, is the RAF’s most famous helicopter. As one of the first Chinooks ordered by the RAF in 1978, she has participated in every major conflict of the last 40 years. Four of her pilots have been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for actions while at the controls of this aircraft.

In 1982, Bravo November was one of four Chinooks being carried south to support the liberation of the Falkland Islands. On 25 May, while she was airborne, an Argentine Exocet missile struck the MS Atlantic Conveyor destroying the other Chinooks, the spares and maintenance equipment, leaving Bravo November as the only survivor.
