Castle Ring, Longdon & Gentleshaw Moderate Ramble
Overview
This is a lovely 8 mile day ramble with Richard that takes in some of the lesser visited areas of Cannock Chase and some lovely villages and farmland in this quiet corner of Staffordshire.
We start at the highest point on Cannock Chase (242m) where we discover the Iron Age hill fort of Castle Ring which is thought to have been occupied around AD 50, by the Celtic Cornovii tribe (and Richard will no doubt explain his residential links to the Cornovii!).
We make our way from here across the Chase, beside the Beaudesert Estate and Cowpasture Covert to Upper Longdon and then Longdon Green. We cross lots of farmland to the Village of Chorley and then meet Cannock Chase again near Gentleshaw Village from where we return to Castle Ring.
Pub Stop: The Red Lion at Longdon Green is a lovely pub and we will aim to stop there around lunchtime for a drink and food (if people wish). Richard will speak to the pub nearer the time regarding arrangements for this and will give more information in the joining details.
