Overview

The Lapworth Museum of Geology holds the finest and most extensive collections of fossils, minerals and rocks in the Midlands. Dating back to 1880, it is one of the oldest specialist geological museums in the UK.

During our behind the scenes visit we will join staff for a guided tour where we will be able to access some of the hidden spaces of the Museum. The Lapworth Museum holds in excess of 250,000 items, the majority of which are held within their stores and archives.

In this tour we will hear about the influential geologists who have contributed to the Museum’s collections, including Charles Lapworth whom the Museum is named after. We will explore some of the Museums hidden gems and favourite objects such as the 'Dudley Bug', and enjoy the fascinating stories they tell.

Please note this tour does not include the Lapworth Museum main galleries. Feel free to look around the main galleries before or after our behind the scenes tour.

Although the museum does not have a café there are plenty of food outlets in the campus. Following our tour we will seek out a place for tea/coffee.

Getting There

The museum is easily accessible via public transport. The museum is a 5 minute walk from University Railway Station. Please see the Visit the Museum section of their website for directions and more information on how to find them.

From past visits we know that parking can be a problem so we would advise using public transport if you are able to.

Parking: The link above also explains parking as we are unable to park at the University of Birmingham Campus. The nearest car park is a multi-story car park, the North East Car Park. This is a pay and display car park (change only) and is a short 10 minute walk from the Museum.

This tour was fascinating and the guide was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about her subject. We were allowed to see lots of artefacts and documents that the Museum hold . Be warned... the tour may last far longer than the 1 hour!
