Overview

Why not enjoy this stunning long weekend walking break in Shropshire, one of England’s most beautiful and overlooked counties! This ideal walking country with its shapely hills, inviting valleys and enchanting villages all combine to produce an ever-changing and attractive landscape. We’ll be staying at Longmynd House, which nestles high amongst 10 acres of private woodland high in the surrounding, breathtaking and peaceful hills, so rest assured we’re in for another superb weekend of walking. There’s so much to do here on a long weekend so we will choose from the following; a local exploration of the steep sided valleys of the Long Mynd, with a climb to the highest point, Pole Bank, a walk to take in the excellent views from the heights of Caer Caradoc and Bodbury Hill. To the east lies the gentler terrain of Wenlock Edge, an amazingly rare and special wooded limestone escarpment, which offers dramatic views, historic quarries and limekilns, as well as rare lime-loving wildflowers. Whilst out to the west, there is a remarkable line of dark quartzite tors better known as the famous Stiperstones and all the tops reward your efforts with fantastic views across Shropshire and the Welsh borders. Make no mistake, this is superb walking.

Location & Itinerary

Enjoy walking and discovering the wonderful hills, valleys and villages of Shropshire. Those of you who are fortunate to know this area will think of it fondly indeed as it’s one of the most delightful and unspoilt counties in England. We are quite simply surrounded by excellent walking country. The hills to the south have been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Church Stretton is immersed in its heart, in a beautiful valley under the broad moorland of the Long Mynd.

Obviously we will be able to explore the steep sided valleys of the Long Mynd, and possibly even make an ascent to its highest point, Pole Bank. To make life better we can start from the front door and make our way through the estate and along the valley bottom before making our steady ascent through Small Batch and onto Round Hill. There are plenty of options, all of which could involve the Visitor Centre café or the National Trust Visitor Cafe where we may partake of refreshments before nipping back home.

Another lovely walk that also starts from the Hotel takes us across the valley to follow an ancient track onto the flanks of the brooding Caer Caradoc. Our route then takes us around this impressive hill, with fine views back to Church Stretton & The Long Mynd. Now re-crossing the valley further south we pass through All Stretton back to Church Stretton itself where we may pause for refreshments again before wandering back to the hotel.

Then of course there is one of my favorite walks the Stiperstones complete with superb views across to the Welsh Mountains. All in all we are really spoilt for choice and the final decision will be made when we see the weather on the weekend

Is this for me?

To allow you to choose a walk that suits you best, WalkWise UK will provide a minimum of two walks on each day, led by professional and knowledgeable walking guides. On all days there will be a harder walk of 10-12 miles with up to 2000ft of ascent, (please be realistic about your own fitness and undertake the walk that will give you the most pleasure) and a gentler walk of 7-9 miles with less ascent. All walks are weather dependent and own transport or coaches may be taken to the walk starts.

Walk options will be reduced if booking numbers don't allow 2 guides in attendance.
