The York Trust Trail and Lunch
Overview
Today we explore 2 sections of the York Trust Trail followed by a late lunch in the city.
Our themes for the trail will be Literature and Radical York. We will be in search of sites of interest as well as the well known blue plaques. The trail today will cover just over 2 miles of walking (not including the walk back from the restaurant).
Literary York
From the Brontë sisters, to Bram Stoker and Ted Hughes, Yorkshire has long been associated with celebrated authors who have drawn inspiration from the desolate beauty of its rugged moors and ruined abbeys.
Laurence Sterne (1713 – 1768)
Miles Coverdale (1488 – 1569)
Elizabeth Montagu (1718 – 1800)
W. H. Auden (1907 – 1973)
Radical York
From a nineteenth-century, same-sex ‘wedding’ to the leader of a rebellion against Henry VIII, York’s history is peppered with radicals: social, political, cultural.
But just how radical back then, and today, were these people, places and groups in York?
Richard III (1452 – 1485)
Anne Lister (1791-1840)
York’s Suffragettes
Robert Aske (c.1500 – 1537)
