Throwing Pots using a Potters Wheel Taster Session
Overview
Our very own ‘Pottery Throwdown’
This workshop is a great introduction to clay, creating your very own hand-thrown piece.
We will be shown how to prepare the clay and learn the basic essential steps when using the potters’ wheel. Our tutor, either Libby or Pip will demonstrate how to throw a pot and then guide us through each step, as we learn to throw our very own vessels. We will throw three/four pots over the two-hour session. At the end of the session, we will be able to choose our favourite pot and our chosen coloured glaze, which will then be trimmed, fired and glazed for us.
When the pots are ready for collection Libby or Pip will text us and arrange a convenient collection time. Alternatively, your pot can be posted out to you for a charge of £10.00 per pot.
For an additional charge of £10 per pot, you can choose more of your creations and have them fired and glazed in the in-house glazes.
About our Tutors:
Pip
In 2000 I obtained my Ceramics degree at Wolverhampton University, and I have worked there ever since, as a Ceramic Technician and the past 16 years as Technical Demonstrator in Ceramics, instructing students in various processes of clay.
My classes aim to offer participants an opportunity to build skill in wheel work, hand- building, slip casting and surface decoration, along with developing creative potential and relationship to material.
I am a maker for practicality, if I need something in my home or garden, my first question to myself is, can I make it in clay?! There's nothing, I enjoy more than to make bespoke gifts for my friends and family, it means so much more to give a gift that I have made with my own hands.
Libby
A practicing multi-media artist and designer, specialising in both mould making and hand building using glass and clay in both sculptural and functional work. My playful and often humorous work evokes contemplation on the power and place we each hold in society.
I’ve been able to regularly exhibit in and around UK museums, galleries and virtual exhibitions. Working alongside contemporary curators to develop relationships with communities and connection to heritage and feminist practice.
With 30 years of artistic experience and developing my practice whilst studying BA (Hons) Glass and Ceramic Design and MA Ceramic Arts, at Wolverhampton University, I have an extensive range of knowledge in ceramic techniques.
My classes aim to offer participants an opportunity to build skill in wheel work, hand- building, slip casting and surface decoration, along with developing creative potential and relationship to material.
