Halloween and Fireworks in Helmsley Weekend
Celebrate Halloween and Fireworks Night in one weekend on our visit to the fabulous YHA hostel in Helmsley.
Located in one the prettiest market towns in North Yorkshire, this cosy purpose-built property provides a perfect base to explore this unique region overflowing with history, heritage and unrivalled scenery.
Whether you want the stunning scenery and history of the North York Moors, the attractions of the seaside or the cultural delights of the city of York, then Helmsley is the ideal base. Around the market square is an eclectic mix of cafes, bookshops, galleries and delicatessens providing the best Yorkshire has to offer. Rievaulx Abbey and Castle Howard are both on the doorstep, whilst the cultural delights of York, Fountains Abbey and the seaside resorts of Whitby and Scarborough are all within easy reach. The Cleveland Way begins from Helmsley in the shadow of the imposing 12th Century castle ruins, and mountain bike routes abound on the surrounding heather-covered moorlands and at nearby Sutton Bank and Dalby Forest.
Our weekend starts on Halloween so we'll have a spookily good party after dinner in the hostel. Fancy dress strongly encouraged!
We will have a full cooked breakfast on the Saturday morning (breakfasts included in price) with a continental breakfast on Sunday. Also included are packed lunches, and tea, coffee and cake.
On Saturday evening there is a fireworks display at Helmsley Sports Club, which we expect to start at 7pm. Entry to this is at a small additional cost, which was £5 last year. Afterwards we will have two-course meal at The Feathers in town and after that we can sample more of Helmsley’s nightlife.
Help with cooking and the cleaning up is as always very much welcomed & expected.

Location & Itinerary
Helmsley is a lovely market town in North Yorkshire. Around the market square is an eclectic mix of cafes, bookshops, galleries and delicatessens providing the best Yorkshire has to offer.
There's lots to do in the area. Walking on the Cleveland Way and local walks. Helmsley Castle, Visitor Centre, Walled Gardens, craft workshops and Duncombe Park are all on the doorstep. Rievaulx Abbey and Nunnington Hall (1 mile), Castle Howard, Ryedale Folk Museum, and Eden Camp (8 miles) are all nearby too.
Travel & Stay
The hostel has 39 beds in eight rooms: some are four-bedded and some are six-bedded. All bedrooms have washbasins, mirror and shaver points, and modern sturdy metal beds with individual bed lights. All bedding is provided.
The ground floor public rooms are open-plan. The conservatory is equally appealing on an evening. There is a TV area off to the side of the spacious dining room. The well-equipped and modern self-catering kitchen often receives praise from guests as one of the best in the network. FREE WI-FI available throughout the hostel for guests!
For the cyclists amongst us there is a secure bike shed (with space for 25-30 bikes) along with tool kit, repair stand, and pressure washer. There is also a very good drying room for those few occasions when it rains in this part of Yorkshire.
There is car parking on site for 9 cars (more if we block each other in) and there is additional street parking nearby.
Take the A170 Thirsk - Scarborough road into Helmsley. At the mini roundabout take the 2nd exit (turn right). Take the 1st turning on the left (opposite BATA garage), then first left again into Carlton Lane. YHA Helmsley is on the left hand side.
Parking: There is parking for nine cars in spaces at the front of the building. Please share transport if possible. Please ensure no cars are parked on the driveway to allow access for emergency vehicles. Please be considerate about parking and do not park outside the neighbours' houses. If the car park is full please park on Carlton Road, not Carlton Lane.

Fantastic location.
Excellent weekend with great people. Food was fantastic as always and as always we were spoilt.
The bunk barn weekends are good value for money I really enjoyed the weekend it was my first bunk barn weekend.
Helmsley is a lovely Market Town, ideal to use as a base for either walking or cycling, and has a number of interesting shops, and even an outdoor swimming pool. I hope we go again.
The weekend was good value for money the hostel was very comfortable.
