Overview

How would you survive a nuclear attack?

Hidden deep in the Cheshire countryside, the bunker stayed secret for more than 50 years. Now the blast doors are open, and you can discover the labyrinth of rooms and authentic equipment used to run this defence region in the event of a National Emergency.

See our nuclear weapons display and come face to face with generations of our nuclear defence. Watch the previous banned film “The War Game” in our cinema. Visit the N.A.A.F.I. Canteen for your survival rations and stop off in the Shop to find souvenirs and Cold War items to take home.

Travel back in time to 1984 to discover the secrets of government and how you would survive a nuclear attack. Explore a labyrinth of rooms and corridors as they were during the Cold War, hidden deep in the Cheshire countryside. The bunker covers 35,000 square feet over two floors, one above ground and one 40ft underground.

Exploring the bunker...

The self-guided tour takes about 1.5 - 2 hours and you can also watch a screening of The War Game, which lasts around 45 minutes.

There are several steps to the lower level and we do not have a lift. There are chairs around the museum for you to rest. For more information on accessibility please see 'Is This For Me'

Location & Itinerary

Food & Meals

Our canteen previously served hungry civil servants and now offers a warm welcome to our visitors.

While the rest of the bunker reflects our Cold War history, in the N.A.A.F.I. Canteen we have brought back a flavour of our wartime years in the Second World War.

Surrounded by aeroplanes, a submarine, torpedo and a selection of memorabilia you can enjoy hot and cold drinks, and snacks.

We strive to provide high quality food and use food from local suppliers.

We will ask for a pre order before we go but you will need to pay on the day.

Is this for me?

The museum is based on two floors with the lower floor only being accessible via two stairwells. One is slightly wider with more areas to stop so may be more easily managed by some visitors. There are 30 steps to the lower floor. To gain access to the top floor there is a large concrete ramp and a set of 16 shallow steps. The ramp might be considered steep by some visitors, if you require assistance you can call the team inside the bunker directly on 01270 623353 who will come out and assist immediately. There are also braille and tactile markers on the stairs side the building.

The tour is self-guided and takes are 2 hours to complete. There are many places to stop and sit down on comfortable chairs.

There is a canteen and shop on the top floor with a hearing loop installed at reception. We provide hot and cold drinks and some snacks but cannot provide hot meals or sandwiches.

Getting There

By Car

From Junction 16 on the M6 motorway take the signs to Nantwich then Whitchurch on the A530. (Follow the brown Secret Bunker signs)

By Canal

The bunker is a very short 5-minute walk from the Shropshire Union Canal. Just hop off at Hack Green Bridge No. 85. The bunker’s arial mast can be seen from the bridge and there is a sign on the canal side by the bridge.

Other Transport

Unfortunately, the closest public transport is Nantwich train and bus stations 3 miles away. As a previously secret site we are a bit “off the beaten track”.
