Location & Itinerary
Norfolk is one of the hottest and driest counties in the UK! It is full of pretty and attractive villages, there are numerous wildlife reserves, lots of cafes and traditional village inns and it has a stunning coastline. One day will undoubtedly see us exploring the coastline much of which is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Along the way there are numerous nature reserves many reclaimed from the old marshes and fens, all of which are unique but together form a very valuable and beautiful wildlife resource. But its not just the birds that benefit, the seals and the flora is wonderful too, and all this combines to create a wonderful feeling of space, with vast open skies and broad horizons creating a unique, peaceful, and mysterious atmosphere. The coast also has its own bus route which runs through all the villages west of Cromer which enables a huge degree of flexibility on the walks as you can curtail the route on any bus stop!
Along the coast are also some very historic villages which were once very busy and important ports. However, today they are picturesque little villages, and we’ll enjoy wandering through them. The old port of Blakeney, is now a haven for weekend yachtsmen, but the traditional character of the place remains with narrow streets and wonderful flint cottages. Cley by the sea, which is now…..not so by the sea, is a quaint village with flint and red brick cottages and has its own very impressive windmill! Then there’s Weybourne and Sherringham which also which need to be visited.
Wandering inland is totally different and offers a highly varied wealth of habitats, woodlands, downs and meadows as well as the heaths of Norfolk. The area around Mannington Hall and Wolterton contrasts well with the coast and offers further interest to us walkers. The estates owned by Lord and Lady Walpole have been opened to walkers and there is some gently rolling and beautiful countryside in between. Linking the sleepy hamlets together, we pass through some spectacular water meadows, alongside the tranquil River Bure, past lakes and through the woodland to round off another lovely day. Add together, the coast, the wildlife, the history, interesting villages, windmills, historic manor houses and we have a interesting and highly varied walking programme; definitely not boring flat Norfolk! (We have even found a hill over 100m high! )
To allow you to choose a walk that suits you best, WalkWise UK aim to provide two walks on each day, led by professional and knowledgeable walking guides. Our plan is to offer a harder walk of 10-12 miles with up to 2000ft of ascent and a more moderate walk of 7-9 miles with less ascent. However if number do not permit, we may reduce this to one grade, which we will ensure has opt outs and extensions to all more flexibility. All walks are weather dependent and own transport or coaches may be taken to the walk starts.

Travel & Stay
The Hotel du Paris is an unusual grade 2 listed building in the finest position in Cromer, by the shops and historic parish church and overlooking the bay below with its beautiful beach and pier. There is of course a relaxing and attractive bar and a magnificent reception lounge with splendid architectural details. The restaurant divides into two sections and the interesting stained-glass window adds character. On an evening you can relax in the hotel, or since we are right in the heart of Cromer it is possible to wander out and explore the pubs, many of which feature live music at the weekend. Some of the bedrooms feature lovely sea or town views. All the bedrooms have tea/coffee making facilities, hair dryer and Freeview TV with radio channels and they are all also ensuite and are equipped with a bath or shower. Most rooms have a shower rather than a bath; if you have a strong preference for one or the other, please tell us when you make your booking because we are often fully booked, and it can be difficult to change rooms on arrival (please note these are requests only and cannot be guaranteed).
