Overview

This unique walk takes in, amongst many other points of interest, the only mainland village in Britain to get cut off twice a day by the tide. Richard has checked that the tides will allow access, and as luck would have it, the tides on this day are also favourable for viewing the huge flocks of migrating seabirds that visit this area at this time of year. If you bring your binoculars, before you set off you will have a good chance of seeing curlew, dunlin, shelduck, plover, knot and godwit. We start by walking on quiet roads and footpaths to reach the pretty village of Overton and then get expansive views over the Lune estuary before descending into the atmospheric village of Sunderland. In the 18th Century this was a bustling port and shipbuilding location. By the 19th Century fortunes waned when Glasson Dock stole its trade, and passing sailors then called it ‘Cape Famine’. This downturn effectively froze the village in time, and Richard will point out the interesting buildings that remain. We return to the cars via a quiet lane and coastal track. Please bring your walking boots and sandwiches as we will be stopping en route for a picnic.

Facilities: Use Lancaster (Forton) Services on the M6 on the way up if you go that way.
