Walsall Lime Pits, Canals and Civil War Ramble
Overview
Walsall is not a town that many associate with discovering the great outdoors, but today Richard hopes to surprise you by linking a number of wonderful green spaces of different kinds that are all linked to the industrial and political history of the region.
It's a flat and easy 2-3 hours of walking that takes in a hidden lakeside nature reserve, a fine Victorian arboretum and the site of 2 battles in the English Civil War. Our route joins them up mainly by following waterways that include two canals, a stream, and the lakes of Walsall Arboretum. Richard can also spin tales of early aviation, Victorian philanthropy and how Walsall lost a 'swimming Mayor' along the way. He's also hoping to get us inside a rather special church if they will open for us.
We hope to be able to take a café stop at Walsall Arboretum on the way. There is also a pub to for afterwards if you're still thirsty!
This is an easy walk of around 5 - 6 miles with many stops along the way to enjoy the landscapes and features.
