Overview

We have often used this wonderful venue, but many of you have said its too far for a weekend, so this year we have managed to negotiate shorter 3 night and a walking week in this fantastic venue. Set in the heart of the Lake District, Glaramara has been continuously refurbished over the last 20 years and is now one of our favourite, most comfortable and best catered venues. It is also surrounded by some of the finest scenery and lakes in the country. Understandably this is one of our most popular locations, occupying a picture-perfect setting which is the envy of every walker. From the front door of the centre, there is a massive range of walking to suit every ability of walker! The valley of Borrowdale with the beautiful Derwent water offers many low level routes and the bus and ferry services offer further flexibility to adapt the length of the walks. And there are the neighbouring valleys of Buttermere, Crummockwater and Loweswater that offer more variety and untold beauty. Of course should you wish to head into the fells the area is surrounded by inviting hills from the diminutive Castle Crag to the lofty heights of Great Gable or the Scafells. Truth be told there is no shortage or walking at all levels from this wonderful centre.

Location & Itinerary

WalkWise Walking Programme: Quite simply this centre is one of the finest walking locations anywhere in the country, truly immersed in the deep Lakeland valleys and surrounded by majestic mountains and inviting Lakeland fells. The delightful river valleys with their tranquil lakes, dancing waterfalls and peaceful woodland, enchanting scenery not to mention the traditional inviting villages which house attractive cafes and bars to tempt the walkers away from their endeavours.

The gentler walkers have a myriad of options with some beautiful lower routes, many of which are serviced by buses and ferrys which offer additional options to curtail or extend your days. There are many stunning walks through the surrounding valleys, including Derwentwater, the beautiful Langstrath a distinctively Scottish valley with a beautiful tumbling beck running through its length and numerous swimming pools. There is also the picture perfect Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater lakes which are all set amidst some of the most stunning scenery in the country. Then how can we forget the in the amazing Borrowdale valley itself, complete with the lady of the lakes itself and the numerous hidden tea shops and the traditional Lakeland, hamlets of Watendlath, Seathwaite and Rosthwaite, all of which have outdoor seating areas so we can enjoy a cream tea along the way too. Slightly elevated above the valleys we can wamder into the lower fells such as Castle Crag, Kings How and Bessy Boot are all wonderful viewpoints providing excellent value for your efforts. Beyond, Styhead Pass and Sprinkling Tarn lie at the very heart of the most spectacular mountains in England, and are the doorway into the higher fells.

Then should you wish to do a little more, the Fellwalkers have a smorgasbord of options available to them including some of the finest hills and mountains in the UK. England’s highest mountain Scafell Pike lies within a day’s walk of the centre, as does the beautiful Great Gable, and there are the other temptations of Glaramara, Allen Crags, Eagle Crag, Sergeant Crag, High Raise, Ullscarf, Dale Head, Hindscarth and Robinson which are all accessible walks from the front door of the centre. As if that’s not enough it’s only a short hop over Honister Pass to a range of walks in the beautiful Buttermere valley. The final choice of walks and routes will be selected closer to the time when the weather and previous experiences of Borrowdale have been established.

Is this for me?

We will provide a minimum of two walks on each day, led by professional and knowledgeable walking guides. On both days there will be a harder walk of 10-12 more miles with 2,500ft+ of ascent, and a gentler walk of 6-9 miles with less ascent.

All walks are weather dependent and own transport may be taken to the walk starts.
