Overview

Join Linda for this 5 or 8 mile, Highgate to Tottenham Hale walk & Bruce Castle Museum Visit.

Please meet outside Highgate tube Station, 'exit 3', by 09:50 ready for a prompt 10:00 departure. If travelling on the Northern Line tube from Kings Cross to Highgate, you might need to catch a tube heading towards Edgware, as far as Camden Town, and then change onto a tube train on the line heading to High Barnet to reach Highgate.

We will walk via Highgate Wood to Queen's Wood (toilets and takeaway coffee opportunity at the Queen's Wood café).

The River Moselle has it's source in Queen's Wood and travels to Tottenham Hale (the same as we are going to do today) where it runs into the River Lea. The Moselle River is responsible for the sayings 'When it rains in Muswell Hill, it floods in Tottenham' and "Highgate's rain is Tottenham's pain"!

We'll walk through Priory Park (toilets at the café), along back streets and over New River to Lordship Park (toilet facilities at the play hub by duck pond).

We will stop for lunch at about 12:45 (at your own expense) at the first Community Pub in north London. Or, if you prefer, you can bring a picnic to have sitting in Bruce Castle Park.

After lunch we'll visit Bruce Castle museum which houses an array of interesting exhibits and exhibitions including one on the life of Rowland Hill (who once owned the property and was the headmaster of it's progressive school for boys) and the penny black stamp that he invented. There are 1940's pub games machines, historic machines for domestic use in homes, postal history exhibits, and much more.

If a 5 mile walk, lunch and the Bruce Castle museum is enough for you, you can go home from the nearby White Hart Lane railway station as we walk past it.

We will then walk past Tottenham Hotspur football stadium (its OK, they are not playing today!), through back street, follow Pymmes Brook and cross parkland to Tottenham Hale on the River Lea.

You might like to join those of us who like to treat ourselves to a pot of tea and cake/ dessert in a café or The Ferry Boat pub before we catch our transport home from the Tottenham Hale railway, tube and bus transport hub.

Please bring drinking water, money to buy lunch and any other drinks and snacks you may want.

Please dress for the weather on the day (and you might like to bring a golfing umbrella if it is expected to rain!).

Physical exercise and social interaction is said to regulate our nervous system and sharpen our focus. Movement stimulates the release of brain-devised neurotrophic factor (BDNF) 'brain fertiliser' apparently, so please join us for a day of collective social health and welfare! (Plus a pub lunch, tea, and cake which I believe is also good for us!).

Please check your transport times, and for any engineering works, at least the day before the walk and allow some contingency time for delays. The walk needs to depart on time for the comfort and enjoyment of those who have arrived on time. Thank you.
