The Exchange Heritage Building Tour - Birmingham
Overview
A Spice exclusive!
We have visited this beautiful building a couple of times and have always had great feedback so don't miss out! We've also recently had a request to repeat this tour.
Today we will join one of the Exchanges friendly guides on a heritage tour of The Exchange building and discover the rich history and fascinating stories behind its walls.
The Exchange is a beautiful example of art deco architecture, designed by renowned architect Thomas Cecil Howitt, and opened in 1933 as the headquarters of the Birmingham Municipal Bank. During the tour, we will explore the stunning banking hall, see the original safe deposit boxes and vaults, visit rooms not normally open to the public and learn about the building's unique features and design.
Our guide will take us on a journey through time, revealing the secrets and tales of this historic building, from its role as a bank to the University’s recent redevelopment and restoration, where ground-breaking research from campus meets the people of the city.
After our guided tour we will have an opportunity to look at any current exhibitions and have time to visit the on site cafe for a bit of lunch or just a cuppa and a cake

What a great visit. Damien our guide was very welcoming, enthusiastic and entertaining. He gave us 90 mins of his time and couldn’t have been more proud of the venue, very infectious. It’s such a hidden gem in the centre of our city, I’ve lived here all my life and didn’t know it was there!!!! We got to hear a 30 min jazz concert in the cafe afterwards too, a real bonus.
It was fab tour on a gorgeous day! The location at the centenary square in Birmingham is excellent. It has Africa history.
The tour was very good, and worth the money, good history from the tour guide. Now I know they have a very good coffee shop too. Overall, all good
The event was fab. Millie who was our guide received a round of applause from us all. I spoke to her after to find out who I could email to offer my praise and thanks to (which I did and received a nice note back). Turns out she was new to role and we were her second ever tour. You'd never have known.
Whilst many of us went off to the pub after to continue the social fun, the venue had a cracking cafe open to the public (and the cake looked amazing) so if it was considered to be repeated might be worth combining it with a trip to the cafe after ??
