Sunday Walk: Piethorn Valley and Ogden Villages
Overview
Join us today to take in the fabulous views from the Moorland and Hills above Rochdale for this lovely walk, remember though, to get the views, we have to take on quite a few uphill paths so be prepared! We start our walk from the Piethorn Car Park making out way around Ogden Reservoir, past woodland and up in to Moorland affording us lovely views of the 5 reservoirs of Piethorn, Rooden, Ogden, Kitcliffe and Norman Hill. We are amongst loose sheep a lot of the walk so you will need to keep any dogs on a lead unless they can be trusted not to chase livestock. We pass through the lovely villages of Higher and Lower Ogden during the walk with their listed buildings made from local gritstone with some dating back to 1710. We are walking in the main on rough, sometimes rocky footpaths, moorland and Bridle ways and if you like to walk with walking poles you might want to bring them along.
Boots: We would recommend ankle supporting boots as the ground is rough and uneven in places.

Continue past the Mills and when you reach the Y Junction keep left on the Waterworks Road and as you reach the reservoir on the left you will see the small car park. If the car park is full, please just park on the side of the lane. We meet in the car park at at the side of Ogden Reservoir and The Piethorne Valley Rangers Office, Waterworks Rd, Newhey, Rochdale, Lancashire OL16 3TQ. There are toilets at the Rangers office by the side of the car park which may be open, however when we were last there early in 2023 they were closed as they had been vandalised.
