Sunday Walk: Borsdane Woods and the Leeds & Liverpool Canal
Overview
This walk features the lovely Borsdane Wood with many bird species. The wood is set in a valley almost two miles long and is a good example of ancient woodland with protected fauna and flora.
The walk starts at the spacious Woods Road car park in Aspull and crosses fields and wooded areas towards the Leeds and Liverpool canal. We continue along the canal past a series of locks before going down the old railway line and onwards towards Hindley Railway Station. Skirting this station brings us down into a valley and allows us to walk the full extent of Borsdane Wood. Lunch will be taken about a quarter way into the woods after putting down some bird food nearby to encourage them to join us. After exiting the woods, it is a pleasant walk back to the car park across open fields.

We meet at Woods Road Car Park: Leave the M61 at Junction 6 for De Havilland Way and at the roundabout take the A6027 towards Chorley then at the next roundabout take the first left on to the A6 Chorley Road. After a quarter of a mile at the traffic lights turn right on to Dicconson Lane and continue for 2-3 miles past the Gerard Arms and then ahead at a small roundabout at a T junction and towards the main central roundabout in Aspull. At this roundabout turn left down Wigan Road past the Bindi Indian restaurant and take the second turning on the left into Woods Road alongside playing fields and the car park is up this road on the left hand side.
