South Devon Easter Walking and Social Weekend
Overview
Overview: This weekend will appeal to both social walkers who want shorter walks and more serious walkers who want longer ones; on two of the days there will be the option of a longer or shorter walk. The walks will be moderate as they will have some gradients, which gives the area its wonderful scenery, but we will take our time and admire the stunning scenery.
There is also plenty to do for non walkers or if you want to mix & match walking with social / tourist stuff. Paignton is a great seaside town with a wonderful seafront and lovely sandy beaches. There are heritage trains, boat trips and the Agatha Christie house. The beautiful town of Dartmouth is nearby.
We stay at The Queens Hotel in Paignton which is a short walk from the railway station and very close to the seafront with its lovely sandy beaches.
The social après walking: Dinner will be at the hotel each night; Steve will do a welcome chat after dinner on the Friday where he will go through the plans for the weekend. The hotel will have entertainment each night or we can go into town to explore the nightlife.
Includes
The package includes: Three nights dinner, bed and breakfast, guided walks each day and packed lunches on the Saturday and Sunday.
Extras
Transport to some of the walks.
Location & Itinerary
The walking programme: We will be making the most of the area with coastal walks. Here are some details of walks in the area. Steve will finalise the walking programme nearer the time.
Paignton to Brixham: This walk is from the hotel to the pretty harbour town of Brixham and its surrounding coastline. The walk largely uses the South West Coastal Path and at times follows the heritage railway line. The walk takes in the lovely sandy beaches of Goodrington Sands and Broadsands. There are also wooded parts and of course stunning views of coves and various ‘points’ along the way. The walk to Brixham is around 6 miles but we can do more around Berry Head if you want a longer walk.
Dartmouth, the river Dart and Kingswear: This walk will see us getting the steam train to Kingswear, where we catch the ferry to the beautiful fishing town of Dartmouth. Depending on which day we do this walk, it will either be a morning walk from Dartmouth. Initially we follow the coastal part along the Dart estuary as it empties into the sea to Dartmouth Castle. From there, we continue along the South West Coastal Path as far as Compass Cove when we make our way back to Dartmouth inland. This is around 5 miles. If this is done on the Saturday or Sunday, there will be the option of an afternoon walk from Kingswear. This follows the River Dart upstream passing Dartmouth Harbour. The return uses the Dart Valley Trail as we make our way back to Kingswear for the steam train back to Paignton. This will be a further 3 miles.
Teignmouth and Dawlish: We catch the train to Teignmouth and walk the coastal path to Dawlish or Dawlish Warren depending on how far you wanted to walk. The walk will be 5 or 8 miles.
