Overview

Overview: This weekend will appeal to both social walkers who want shorter walks and more serious walkers who want longer ones; on two of the days there will be the option of a longer or shorter walk. The walks will be moderate as they will have some gradients, which gives the area its wonderful scenery, but we will take our time and admire the stunning scenery.

There is also plenty to do for non walkers or if you want to mix & match walking with social / tourist stuff. Paignton is a great seaside town with a wonderful seafront and lovely sandy beaches. There are heritage trains, boat trips and the Agatha Christie house. The beautiful town of Dartmouth is nearby.

We stay at The Queens Hotel in Paignton which is a short walk from the railway station and very close to the seafront with its lovely sandy beaches.

The social après walking: Dinner will be at the hotel each night; Steve will do a welcome chat after dinner on the Friday where he will go through the plans for the weekend. The hotel will have entertainment each night or we can go into town to explore the nightlife.

South Devon & Cornish Coast 3

Includes

The package includes: Three nights dinner, bed and breakfast, guided walks each day and packed lunches on the Saturday and Sunday.

Extras

Travel Insurance: It is also recommended that when travelling on holiday or attending Spice weekends away in the UK or overseas that you have adequate travel insurance in case of emergency, cancellation, etc. Travel insurance is an important aspect to booking a weekend or holiday, giving you protection against unforeseen circumstances. While we cannot recommend specific insurance policies as everyone’s requirements are personal to them, Spice have linked up with market leader Staysure Travel Insurance which you may like to take a look at.

Location & Itinerary

The walking programme

Saturday: Paignton to Brixham: Today we will walk from the hotel to pretty harbour town of Brixham and its surrounding coastline. The walk largely uses the South West Coastal Path and at times follows the heritage railway line. The walk takes in the lovely sandy beaches of Goodrington Sands and Broadsands. There are also wooded parts and of course stunning views of coves and various ‘points’ along the way. The walk to Brixham is around 6 miles and is classed as moderate as there are some gradients. There is the option of a further 3 miles to and around Berry Head if you want a longer walk. If you wanted an easier walk, you could get the bus to Brixham with Arlene and meet us there for the afternoon walk to Berry Head.

Sunday: Dartmouth, the river Dart and Kingswear: This walk will see us getting the steam train to Kingswear, where we catch the ferry to the beautiful fishing town of Dartmouth. Initially we follow the coastal part along the Dart estuary as it empties into the sea to Dartmouth Castle. From there, we take a bridleway towards Little Dartmouth. The return is along the South West Coastal Path back to Dartmouth. There are some great river and sea views with this walk. This is around 5 miles. There is the option of a second 3 mile walk in the afternoon from Kingswear, thought some woods and returning along the estuary and heritage railway line. If you wanted am easier walk, Arlene will walk as far as Dartmouth Castle and return the same way, making a 2 mile walk and there is also the option of the 3 mile walk from Kingswear.

Monday: Teignmouth and Dawlish: Todays walk is uncertain at the moment. The plan was to catch the train and walk the coastal path from Teignmouth (the path from Paignton heading East isn’t that pretty). However, the storms earlier in the year have damaged some of the sea walls, closing part of the path. They hope to reopen the path by Easter, but this isn’t guaranteed. There are options though and Steve will assess what is possible and offer a suitable walk.
