Private Guided Tour of Derby Cathedral and The Bridge Chapel
Overview
Today we will have a private guided tour with one of Derby Cathedrals volunteer guide.
The Cathedral Church of All Saints was founded in 943 and is at the heart of a modern city of making. It is one of Derby’s most beautiful and historic sites and holds many important monuments of Derby’s and Derbyshire’s past. Inside you will find many treasures such as the tomb of Bess of Hardwick, a memorial to Florence Nightingale and the impressive wrought iron screen by Robert Bakewell. There is much to find out about the Cathedral’s stories and history.
We may be lucky enough to spot the resident peregrines. A young pair of Peregrine Falcons first nested at Derby Cathedral in 2006 when a small wooden ledge was installed on the East face of the tower. In the following months three chicks were raised there. Those chicks fledged and left the city that summer and two more were raised in 2007. It was then that two web cams were installed, broadcasting the progress of the Peregrines through the day and night to hundreds of thousands of people from Derby to Timbuktu! A further two have since been added. So far over 3.5 million hits from over 70 countries have been recorded.
We will also have the opportunity to visit the Bridge Chapel. The Bridge Chapel is situated on the banks of the River Derwent, only a 5 minute walk from the Cathedral, and is one of six medieval bridge chapels left in the UK. At the time it was built, the chapel offered spiritual reassurance to travellers and served as a collection point for tolls for traffic crossing the bridge into Derby.
The tour will be around 90 minutes
After our visit we will look for somewhere to have a welcome cuppa or lunch.
