Horse Trekking Over Scenic Cannock Chase
Overview
Cannock Chase Trekking Centre is an ultra-modern, state of the art Horse Riding Centre, set in the stunning surrounds of Cannock Chase. Spice first visited them in 1999 and although it has been several years since we were last there, they remember us fondly and can't wait to welcome us back!
Lisa, who owns the Riding School is a great horsewoman (and ex Levi jeans model!), and has improved the centre no end over the years. They now have now have a covered arena, a complement of 46 well-trained horses, and their gorgeous Ranch Bistro, which serves amazing food and drinks.
Our trek is perfect for a wide range of abilities, whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced rider. All that is required from you is a basic level of fitness as we will be out on Cannock Chase for the full two hours.
Full instruction will be given to teach beginners how to do a rising trot, and experienced riders can break off with our guides for a canter if they wish.
This is a public ride, but we have a number of spaces held for Spice. We also plan to meet in their onsite Ranch Bistro for lunch or drinks beforehand, to get to know one another.
Includes
- Two hour trek with tuition
- Hire of safety helmet
Extras
- Optional lunch/drinks in the Ranch Bistro before
Lisa photographed above, grew up on a riding school in Cannock Chase. She’s passionate about horses and has always wanted others to understand just how satisfying it can be to ride one of these beautiful creatures. Lisa’s childhood dream of owning an inclusive riding centre came to fruition in 1995, when Cannock Chase Trekking Centre first opened its doors to the public.
Cannock Chase Trekking Centre is set in 43 acres of land with immediate access to the breath taking natural environment of Cannock Chase; a designated' Area of Outstanding National Beauty', nestled in the heart of Staffordshire.
This trekking centre specialises in providing off-road horse/pony trekking that will enable you to experience the ever-changing seasonal landscape from the unique viewpoint, that you can only get on horseback.
Location & Itinerary
The Ranch Bistro evokes the aura of Norwegian ski lodges in the winter and Western ranch haciendas in lazy summers. They have stunning views over the countryside and horses too. They offers fresh-off-the-roastery coffee, hand-crafted, luxury milkshakes, cakes and lunch/brunch options.
Spice plan to meet before here before our trek to get to know each other over a coffee or food. The option for another drink after the trek is also there for those that wish.
Although not a Spice exclusive event, we have the opportunity to meet in their café beforehand to get to know each other.
Weight Limit: The trekking centre currently have a weight limit for treks of 15 stone but if you exceed this and are interested, please feel free to double check as it can depend on which horses are available and your experience.
Our trek begins at 1.30pm but for those that wish, we can meet in their lovely bistro just before 12noon to enjoy lunch or coffee and a cake.
We can order and pay individually on the day so you can order as little or as much as you like.

Feedback from our visit in October 2025
· This event was wonderful, 2hrs treking and an occasional trot over Cannock Chase was excellent value for money. The centre covered everyone's needs, allowing more experienced riders to branch off and canter. I would happily book this or similar events again. Claire was, as always, very welcoming and friendly, putting me at ease as I hadn't been on a horse for a very long time, the centre riders also rode amongst us, chatting and advising on how to handle our horse, keeping a check we were all ok.
Excellent day
· It was an amazing day. The staff at Cannock chase made the experience so enjoyable and at all times checked I was ok. Claire was really friendly and informative and look forward to meeting up with her again soon.
I would definitely do the horse riding again if another event is organised.
· I just loved the whole experience . The event was very well organised with clear instructions of route with extra information to locate venue.
I also found the tips regarding clothing really helpful I would have forgotten the gloves .
I haven’t ridden for 20 years and found the girls at Riding school very friendly and helpful. I would definitely book a similar event .
I couldn’t say enough positive things about our Trek just loved it can’t wait to do another !!
· First time booking with Spice and what a fabulous afternoon spent horse riding over Cannock chase.
Claire introduced everyone and we all had food and a chat before we went horse riding. I was a complete novice and at the age of 64 had never been on a horse.
I was very scared but Lisa the owner matched us all up with the perfect horse and I then felt very relaxed.
All the staff were fabulous and even got to do some trotting.
I can’t wait to go again as I loved it so much.
