Heaton Park Walk and optional Sunday Lunch
Overview
Today we are taking a 4 mile walk around Heaton Park a 600 acre Municipal Park in Prestwich.
The park contains an 18-hole golf course, a boating lake, an animal farm, a pitch and putt course, a golf driving range, woodlands, ornamental gardens, an observatory, an adventure playground (zipwire and treetop, ask Vikki how fab the tree top experience is!) a Papal monument and a volunteer-run tram system and museum, and is listed Grade II by Historic England. It has the only truly flat bowling greens in Manchester, built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
We will meet in the car park of The Woodthorpe and then enter the park via gate 8, we will walk around the boating lake, passing the Town Hall Colonnade and over to the Somme memorial, we then head uphill to the Temple the parks highest point with views over Manchester city center on a clear day and if the trees have shed their leaves. We will then pass Heaton Hall which you may recognise from some TV programs. We will then head over to the public toilets for a quick stop before heading uphill towards the Treetop trail (passing the Dower House) and stopping at the garden center, were we will stop for a coffee (time dependant) and then back through the park passing the bandstand before going to the farm to see the animals ( time dependant) we then walk pass the donkeys and highland cattle before returning to the Woodthorpe for a well earned lunch at 1.15pm.
