Overview

Join us for this pub social which everyone is welcome to attend - new members and existing members alike. Members, feel free to bring along anyone who would like to find out what Spice is all about.

We meet roughly once a month to give us a chance to chat about events past and future and catch up on what everyone has been up to. It is also a chance for you to feed back what events you would like to see on the calendar. We do vary the venue. We cannot book a table for drinks only, but the staff assure me there is plenty of space.

Please note - this is a free event but please book online in the usual way so we know how many people to expect, if their are insufficient bookings, it will be cancelled.

Current offer on membership is £50 for your first year https://www.spice-social.co.uk/memberships/

Back of Beyond

Real ale pub with regular guest editions, a British and international menu and a small outdoor area.

The pub stands on the site of a ginger beer factory, later used as a Salvation Army barracks, and takes its name from its location on the edge of town. It has plenty of history.

There was also an ever increasing amount of cargo coming in and out of Reading in the 1700s. This was made possible by the building of the Kennet and Avon Canal. The canal, which passes immediately behind The Back of Beyond, was begun as the Kennet Navigation in 1715, and fully opened in 1810.

By 1835, around 50,000 tons of goods were being transported along the waterway. However, the heyday of the Kennet and Avon was short lived – its fate sealed by the arrival of the railway.

The Great Western Railway Company bought the canal in 1852 and left it to rot. By the 1940s it was impassable. It has since been restored and re-opened.
