Overview

Join us as we take a look around this historic furnished house and museum that celebrates the life and literature of Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865), one of the UK's most important Victorian writers. The period rooms and garden throw light on the life of Elizabeth Gaskell and her family. Expert guides will answer your questions and tell you fascinating stories of her work and her world.

Described by the press after her death as ‘one of the greatest female novelists of all time’ Elizabeth Gaskell was born in 1810 and lived at 84 Plymouth Grove in Manchester with her family from 1850 until her death in 1865. She is best known for writing Cranford, North and South and the biography of her friend Charlotte Bronte.

You can walk around the house at your own pace and chat with the knowledgeable volunteer guides with fascinating details.

There is a pleasant downstairs tea-room for a cuppa anytime during your visit - it is a simple set-up, no hot food and no fancy drinks. Toilets downstairs.
