Sue's Sunday Walk - Greenham Common
Overview
We will be walking around Greenham Common. RAF Greenham Common is a former World War II and NATO Cold War airfield located on the border between Greenham and Crookham, two miles South-East of Newbury. It became famous in the 1980s when it was used by the United States Air Force for their cruise missiles and was equally famous for the Women's Peace Camp outside its gates. The Air Force and the Peace Camp have all gone now and the site is now a 1,000 acre nature reserve. The terrain is very similar to that of the New Forest, but on a much smaller scale. As we walk around this flat walk, we will come across reminders of Greenham Common's recent history including nuclear bunkers, but first we’ll head away from the common we’ll walk along a stretch of the Kennet & Avon canal.
There is a café and toilet facilities at the Control Tower. The café closes at 4pm so hopefully we’ll have time for a cup of tea or coffee at the end of the walk.

We will walk whatever the weather (unless there is a severe weather warning from the Met Office) so please dress appropriately, including walking boots or walking trainers. Take a picnic lunch water and refreshments for the walk too. We will meet at 10.15am for a prompt start at 10.30am.
Well behaved dogs are welcome to join the walk with their responsible owners. Dogs must be always kept on a lead throughout the walk. The walk has not been checked for suitability for dogs, which means we may encounter things like stiles. You must be able to carry your dog at these challenges as we are unable to divert the walk.
